Our researchers have developed technologies for treating soil and water contaminated with petroleum products. They have won the EUREKA prize and are patented in Lithuania, the United States and internationally.
In 2011, Biocentras received the main prize of EUREKA, the European intergovernmental cooperation programme, for the environmental project “Optimised complex technology for the treatment of soil contaminated with petroleum products”.
All companies that treat petroleum-contaminated soil biologically, including those in Lithuania, follow these technological principles, but they use less efficient microorganisms.
Biological treatment of waste contaminated with petroleum products is based on the action of microorganisms that break down petroleum hydrocarbons. We use bacterial blends developed by our specialists.
The blends consist of bacteria found in nature and selected as the best suited for the task. They are not microorganisms created by genetic engineering.
All the microorganisms we use belong to Biocentras, and their sequenced samples are kept in an international microorganism depository.
Hydrocarbons are broken down into compounds that are harmless to the environment – carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O) – in line with the requirements of LAND9-2009.
Since 2006, we have been treating soil contaminated with petroleum products at concentrations of up to 50 g/kg using biological methods in the Gariūnai industrial area (Kuro g., Vilnius).
Treatment at the open site takes from 3 to 18 months – the duration and effectiveness depend on many factors.
Soil contaminated with petroleum products can be successfully treated on site, in the contaminated areas themselves, using UAB Biocentras technologies and microorganisms.
Describe the situation and we will reply by email or call you back.
